Liposuction Explained

Under general or local anesthetic, small incisions are made to allow a cannula to be inserted below the skin to remove the fat. Prior to removing the fat, a solution known as tumescent fluid is placed to wet the fat, numb the area, and constrict the blood vessels around the fat. This will allow the fat to be removed without pain and with minimal blood loss. After surgery you will be placed in a snug fitting garment, which will be worn for several weeks.

The Recovery Process

You will spend a couple of hours in the recovery room at the surgery center or hospital before you go home. You will need someone to pick you up from the surgery facility and stay with you in your home overnight. You will have swelling and bruising over the areas treated for the first several days after surgery. Most of our Scottsdale patients are able to return to work within a few days. However, it will be a full 6 weeks before you feel completely recovered from your liposuction surgery.

Potential Shortcomings of Liposuction

It is possible to have an undesirable result even if everything goes smoothly. Liposuction is not a weight loss or skin reduction surgery, and therefore in heavier patients, it is possible to be disappointed by the remaining fat or loose skin.

Risks Associated with the Procedure

As with any surgery there is a possibility that you will experience complications. These include bleeding after the surgery (hematoma), contour irregularities, asymmetry, undesirably thick scars, fluid collections beneath the skin (seroma), numbness, infection, blood clots, and delayed healing. This surgery may require general anesthetic, which carries some risk as well.
